  4.     DIED. Soichiro Honda, 84, pioneering Japanese manufacturer who
  5. built his motorcycle company into a global automotive giant; in
  6. Tokyo. A hands-on mechanic as well as a visionary, Honda scored
  7. his first success in postwar Japan by selling bicycles powered
  8. by military-surplus engines. By the early 1960s his firm was the
  9. world's largest motorcycle maker. Defying Japanese government
  10. bureaucrats who tried to limit the nation's auto industry to a
  11. few dominant firms, Honda began making cars in 1963. In 1982
  12. Honda became the first Japanese automaker to build cars in the
